One great perk about weekends is choosing to dine at off times throughout the day. This was one of those days. Gingerman seemed to call our names as we strolled along the sidewalks of SoNo. We were welcomed by a table under the warm summer sun, setting the tone for a relaxing afternoon drink and appetizers.
While we’re familiar with the establishment’s popular nightlife scene, I learned it’s also an ideal spot for weekend brunch (served until 4) or a spur of the moment afternoon break. We sat beneath an umbrella on their side patio, perusing the many enticing beer options. With 52 draught beers, one hand pulled cask beer, and over 125 bottled selections, you can imagine it wasn’t an easy decision.
The moment we inquired about suggestions for a good sour, our accommodating waitress brought out two samples for us to try. Both recommendations were right on point; light, crisp and refreshingly tart. I sipped on the well-balanced, somewhat fruity Rodenbach Grand Cru, while Hubby enjoyed Liefmans Cuvee Brut with slight hints of cherries. Good to the last drop.
The unique menu options included watermelon pickles, truffled almonds and ovaltine creme brulee, but we couldn’t resist pairing classic comfort food with our Belgian brews. Baked macaroni and cheese and Cajun cheese fries were just the ticket.
Wide shell noodles held a rich, creamy pool of parmesan, mozzarella and cheddar while a golden brown breadcrumb coating added a slight crunch. A small, decadent plate filling enough to be a meal. Also indulgent were crispy, yet soft hand-cut potatoes evenly coated with mildly fiery Cajun spices then blanketed by melted American and cheddar. No greasy mess or artificial cheese sauce here.
Elevated pub fare that goes hand in hand with craft beer. You’ll be glad you went.
