Iskream: The New Feel-Good Frozen Treat

1

Iskream

I don’t mean to brag, but I consider myself a bit of an ice cream connoisseur. Everyone has their strengths, right? So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered Iskream, an all-natural, preservative free, healthier approach to this frozen favorite.

Each pint is low-fat, has no added sugar, and only 90-140 calories per serving, respectively. They’re also made with gluten-free components (although produced in a facility that processes wheat.) Best of all? It’s delicious! Looks like co-owners Susan Patrick of Milford, CT’s Walnut Beach Creamery and Restaurateur/Chef Biagio Barone of Stratford, CT’s Biagio’s Osteria are on to something.

I sampled four out of their seven varieties (It was a tough job, but someone had to do it!), eagerly diving into Banana first; one of my favorite flavors. I was impressed with how rich and creamy it was, holding up to its promise. The fresh banana puree churned with grated nutmeg was incredibly sweet considering it uses plant-based Truvia instead of white sugar. In fact, Banana is one of Iskream’s two selections to be approved by the American Diabetes Association.

The other on that list? A harmonious blend of wild blueberries, raspberries and strawberries known as Berry Good. The inviting lavender hue enticed me to taste this light and refreshing combination, a perfect palette cleanser that picked me right up. Studded with tiny seeds from the berries, it was clear this was made with real ingredients.

While tasty on their own, both Banana and Berry Good would be the perfect accompaniment to a summer pie, slice of pound cake, or grilled peaches I typically enjoy a la mode with a scoop of vanilla. Substituting one of Iskream’s fruity flavors would certainly take it to the next level.

As much as I enjoyed these two options, I admit I typically think of ice cream as a more indulgent fudgy, everything-but-the kitchen sink treat. So you can imagine how eager I was to slide my spoon into the Peanut Butter & Jelly. Oh my gosh. This instantly became my new favorite. It offered a great mouthfeel with finely ground dry roasted peanuts running throughout. I loved the consistency of a creamy peanut butter base complimented by crunchy nuts, then intertwined with sweet swirls of cherry jelly dancing on my tongue. I had to take another bite to be sure. Yes, my research was correct. The sweet, salty juxtaposition was in fact, fantastic.

Last, but certainly not least was the Chocolate Cherry Chunk, which aptly fit my aforementioned description of what I look for in an ice cream. A bold balance of sinfully decadent, silky smooth belgium chocolate elevated by sticky-tart pureed cherries and chunks of bittersweet dark chocolate. Now that’s what I call dessert. Another playful pairing of textures; biting into one of those chocolate pieces was like finding gold. Hubby tried hogging this one, so I had to keep reminding him this was for business. And I take my work very seriously.
